Factors That Trigger Scar Formation :
Injury to skin can certainly lead to formation of scars. There are, however, other factors that can contribute to the size and shape of the scar, and make the scar more noticeable.
1- Wound Infection: Any form of infection at the wound site will lead to a delay in wound healing and a more pronounced scarring of the skin.
2- Wound Dehiscence: When a wound opens, either due to an infection, or stretching of the skin, the final end result and appearance of the wound and the size and shape of the scar will be significantly pronounced.
3- Manipulating the Wound: A healing wound should be left alone and not bothered. Nature knows how to heal itself the best. Removing scabs from a healing wound may result in damage to the fresh skin that is forming, thereby resulting in an inferior outcome.
4- Genetic Predisposition: Certain individuals are prone to heavy scarring. Hypertrophic scarring and keloid formation often run in families. Any skin injury in these individuals may result in heavy scarring of skin.
5- Repeated Injuries: Repetitive injuries to skin can worsen the outcome of the wound healing. This can be best seen in patients who have chronic acne that is poorly treated. Chronic, repeated episodes of acne will result in scarring of skin.
